Red Sox second baseman released after declining minor league assignment
Yahoo Sports - August 26, 2005

BOSTON (AP) -- Mark Bellhorn's brief up-and-down career with the Boston Red Sox came to an almost certain end Friday when they released the second baseman after he declined an assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Bellhorn hit three postseason homers last year but this season he hit .216 with 109 strikeouts in 283 at-bats before going on the disabled list with a sprained left thumb July 18. The team designated him for assignment last Friday while he was on a rehabilitation assignment with Pawtucket, where he hit .179 in 68 at-bats.
By declining the minor league assignment, he can become a free agent once he clears waivers on Tuesday. The Red Sox are set at second base with Tony Graffanino and backup Alex Cora, and no team is likely to claim Bellhorn on waivers, obligating it to pay his current salary.
``We love the guy. He meant a lot to us,'' Boston manager Terry Francona said. ``He's one of the best teammates I've ever seen.''
Bellhorn hit .264 with 17 homers and 82 RBIs last season, his first with Boston. He also struck out 177 times in 523 at-bats.
He was critical to Boston coming back after losing the first three games of the AL championship series to the New York Yankees. He hit a three-run homer in a 4-2 win in Game 6 and a solo shot in a 10-3 win in Game 7.
In the first game of the World Series sweep over St. Louis, Bellhorn's two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth gave Boston an 11-9 win. He also had three walks in Game 4.
``At some point, we have to make decisions on what's best for your ball club and I don't think it means we're not loyal,'' Francona said. ``You have to be loyal to the organization. Sometimes the decisions are hard to make. They trouble us more, but we still have to make them.''

From The Boston Globe

Second baseman Mark Bellhorn is due to clear outright waivers this afternoon, which will leave him three options: He can accept an assignment to Triple A Pawtucket, he can ask for his release, or he can refuse the assignment to Pawtucket, which would compel the Sox to place him on release waivers, making him a free agent once he clears. Bellhorn will not accept the minor league assignment, but will not ask for his release because he will forfeit the balance of the $2.75 million due him in 2005, said agent Mark Rodgers. Bellhorn will wait another 72 hours before he clears release waivers. That will leave Bellhorn little time to seek employment with a contender before the Aug. 31 midnight deadline to set postseason rosters, which is the player's preference, Rodgers said yesterday. ''He's fine," Rodgers said. ''He's disappointed, more than anything, in himself. He's disappointed that, by his play, he opened the door to allow someone else [Tony Graffanino] to get that job. I don't think Mark begrudges the Red Sox anything for what happened. He takes responsibility for what happened." Bellhorn, 31, hit .216 with 7 home runs, 28 RBIs and 109 strikeouts in 283 at-bats with the Red Sox. Bellhorn went on the disabled list July 18 with a sprained left thumb and was not seen again in a Sox uniform. He was playing for Pawtucket on a rehab assignment when the Sox designated him for assignment last Friday.

From MLB.com

Bellhorn officially gone: One week after the Red Sox designated Mark Bellhorn for assignment, the second baseman declined the team's invitation to report to Triple-A Pawtucket, officially ending his tenure with the team. Bellhorn will clear release waivers on Tuesday and will then be free to sign with any Major League team.
After putting together a surprising 2004 season, which included some big hits in the playoffs, Bellhorn couldn't get going this season, then went on the disabled list with a left thumb injury on July 18.
"He meant a lot to us. He's one of the best teammates I've ever seen," said manager Terry Francona. "At some point, you have to make decisions on what's best for your ball club."

The latest bad news from the Herald

This guy found a way to praise and insult Mark at the same time.. but I do appreciate and agree with the praise of course!

Sept 1 - from the Boston Globe:

According to a team source, one scenario the Red Sox are considering is to release second baseman Mark Bellhorn after his 20-day rehab stint at Pawtucket, get him through waivers, and then outright him to Pawtucket and call him up when rosters are expanded Sept. 1. -- Boston Globe

Mark is on the DL, and I was already getting discouraged, and now I'm sad too.

Not sure what else to say at the moment, except - please get better very soon, Mark - we are going to miss you terribly!

JUNE 26, 2005 at Philadelphia

And today was Mark's day..
our very own Kelly reporting...

It was a SPECTACULAR game for Mark!  Started with a walk, then the HR.  Next time up an RBI single scoring Billy, and he was on second when Manny hit the grand slam.  Groundout in the fifth, but then doubled home Damon for the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth and scored himself on a Manny sac fly before Tek homered.  Couple of nice plays in the field, too.  GREAT day!

and from SI -

Mark Bellhorn added three hits, four runs and three RBI
and..

Boston blew a seven-run lead, but Mark Bellhorn hit a go-ahead RBI double in the eighth inning. Bellhorn finished with three hits, including a homer, three RBIs and four runs scored for the AL East-leading Red Sox, who completed their first undefeated road trip (6-0) since going 9-0 in 1977.

"The last 10 to 12 days everybody is seeing the ball well and it spreads through the lineup," said Bellhorn.

Up stepped Mark Bellhorn, who also offered at the first pitch and walloped an RBI double to center, putting the Sox back in the lead at 9-8. Bellhorn was in the middle of everything all day, going 3-for-4, scoring four runs, driving in three and smashing a home run.

April 2005

As you probably know, David Wells sprained his foot Monday night (April 25) - this is the news from RedSox.com:

The Red Sox announced prior to Tuesday's game that Boomer was headed to the 15-day disabled list. He'll likely miss at least a month.

In a statement released by the Red Sox, medical director Dr. Thomas Gill said Wells has a sprained right foot.

"He will benefit from a period of rest and rehabilitation," said Gill. "Currently, there is no exact timeframe for his return. We expect him to be able to maintain his fitness activities and baseball training throughout the period of his rehab."

ALSO:

Mueller back: Third baseman Bill Mueller, who was out of the starting lineup six out of the last seven games dealing with a severe case of the flu, made his return Tuesday night, going 2-for-4.

Mantei good to go: The good news on the injury front was that reliever Matt Mantei's sprained left ankle -- sustained Monday night -- does not appear to be serious. (that's a relief!)

and in other news:

April 26 - Johann Santana earns 17th straight victory, within three of AL record. Santana hasn't experienced defeat in 9 1/2 months.   (very impressive..)
